i honestly love country music, which some might find odd for a pretty-liberal mexican-american raised in la to love. but what can i say, country music has some of the best love songs ever written. its music with heart and soul. and there are few things i hate more when people say things like "i listen to everything but country" as if there is something so wrong with listening to country; or "country? you listen to that hillbilly/redneck stuff?" and the answer is yes! i do my best to explain to people that its more than its stereotypes. that its good music and like all genres you have some stuff that make you cringe. but i can honestly say that there a few songs that will make you cringe/ it gets a bad rep because its audience tends to be 'rednecks' and therefore everyone who listens to country is a gun slinging moonshine drinking, 'fuck yeah 'murica' southerner. but are all rap music fans gang bangers? or are all punk music fans pissed off teens who want anarchy? or all reggae fans pot smoking hippies with dreads? as a fan of all the above music i can tell you no. but i won't force country on anyone cause you'll listen to what you want to listen to cause thankfully we have the apathy to choose. but i just want people to give it a chance before they form opinions. like we've all been told, never judge a book by its cover because behind that boot wearing, cowboy hat, and flannel is heart; heart that writes amazing music.
so here's why i fell in love with country music and continue to love it. it gave a young girl growing up in the late 90s and early 00s fierce women to look up to. listening to shania twain's "man! i feel like a women" or "that don't impress me much," subsequently taught me to be a strong female. that being a woman is to be fierce. that you could do whatever you wanted; go totally crazy, wear what you want, be free. and it was great to dance around to it and feel as fierce as shania, because that's exactly what all women are fierce bamfs. to this day "okay, so you're brad pitt. that don't impress me much" is still one of my favorite lines. it taught me not to settle, that even if a guy is brad pitt he still has to be treat me right and be there for me. there is no settling. plus she looked super fierce in the video for the song with her all leopard print outfit. if anyone knows where i can find a suit like that let me know. or faith hill's "wild one" telling girls to be free, to be whoever they wanted to be. those are just some of the songs that fit a chord with a growing young lady who never wanted to settle, who wanted to make her own choices, and who still wants to be fierce as the women of country music. but lets not forget reba mcentire, dolly parton, miranda lambert, carrie unerwood and all the other countless amazing women in country music. i could go on for days about how much i love them. and even this past weekend, when i saw lady antebellum perform. there there was an expecting hilary scott performing and looking fierce. she's essentially creating live and still rocking out. if that isn't the definition of fierce than i don't know what it.
country music is so much more that its stereotypes. and i wish people would stop judging it by its cover, because if a girl like me can fall in love with the genre anyone ca.
and lastly, i highly advice everyone to catch a zac brown band gig. those guys are amazing. every single member of the band. what jimmy de martini can do with a violin is ridiculous. i just stood there in owe. plus they all put their heart and soul into everything they do. its a thing of beauty and i'm so thankful for the show they put on.
